We’ve got to have one of these.” Clearly, our tester is impressed with the S4000D. “This is the way forward for waste management at a site like this.” Made in Italy by Pezzolato and available in the UK from Arbor Eater Brushwood Chippers, the S4000D is another purpose-built, professional shredder. Yet, in appearance at least, it is totally different to the Timberwolf. Instead of a funnel, there is a hopper and feeding conveyor. Instead of a discharge chute, the S4000D has a conveyor. And instead of material being propelled on a stream of air, the end product from the S4000D simply falls in a neat pile on the ground or into a trailer or skip The S4000D is not as fast as the Timberwolf, but depending on the material, this machine can produce up to 12cu m of shreddings an hour. And by the end of the test we are impressed with the variety of material this unit will take. The model we test arrives on site behind a Land Rover. It is a very mobile unit and is quickly unhitched, manoeuvred into position, the discharge conveyor unfolded and the engine fired up ready for work. The S4000D features a 360? turntable allowing the machine to be lined up for optimum feeding and discharge in tight spaces. It also means reusable shreddings can be piled separately from contaminated material. We have a trailer load of hedgetrimmings and prunings from the college’s shrubberies. Mixed in are leaves and other debris. The material is forked into the hopper and the conveyor carries it to the toothed feeding roller and then into the shredding chamber. An electronic no-stress device can be fitted to protect parts and give the best rpm rate for shredding the material. In the chamber, a rotor is equipped with 48 double-sided oscillating hammers and close flanges. A screen grades the material as it passes through on the discharge conveyor. We are using a 12mm screen, so the shreddings are quite coarse. The trailer is soon emptied. While one member of the team takes the trailer away to pick up another load of waste, the others experiment with any waste materials that are to hand, including cardboard boxes, unwanted houseplants and an 8cm fence post. The latter was accompanied by grunts from what had previously been a remarkably quiet machine; but nevertheless it was processed. The return of a full trailer sees the team alternating freshly cut green waste with soggy, wet, half-composted material from the existing compost heaps. Again, the S4000D gives a star performance. And we like the fact that the Pezzolato Piranha gives you choice. We tested the diesel-engined model, but if you are looking to save money, have a tractor available (ideally 50hp) and mostly work on one site or estate, you may want to consider the S4000T. We are talking a difference of £6,000 — ideal if you need to manage waste now but also have to watch your capital expenditure. In its basic version the S4000 is equipped with a flap for ground discharge but is easily fitted with a discharge conveyor. It can be mounted on a trailer for road transport for low speed or approved for 80km/h. |
